
Tailings Pipelines & Storage
Overview:
Xstrata Coal New South Wales (XCN) was expanding the existing Ravensworth Coal Mine in the Hunter Valley. Our contract involved construction of void embankments and tailings storage, along with extensive pipe relocations on the site.
Scope of work:
- 185,000m3 bulk and detailed earthworks
- 100m of 1,050mm diameter pipe crossing of the New England Highway (underbore)
- 20.5 km of installation of tailings / return water PE pipelines
- 3 km of heavy vehicle access roads
- Construction and maintenance of temporary storm water diversions
- Diversion drain and pipeline bench adjacent to Cumnock No.3 void.
- Flocculant mixing bunds including heavy vehicle access
- Bunded pipe trace and installation of tailings/return water pipelines
- Service area pipelines
- Return water and decant pump installation
- Testing, commissioning and handover
Highlights and challenges:
- Works were constructed in and around mine operations and other mine expansion projects
- Interface with mine personnel and other contractors
- Works were delivered ahead of schedule and below budget
- Management of a 5km long segmented site with limited access points
