Ravensworth Access Road

Overview:

Construction of a new 2.4km road into Ravensworth Open Cut mine to allow for mine expansion.

Scope of Works:

  • Construction of five temporary and permanent sediment dams including 11km of clean water and dirty water conveyance channels to enable road construction
  • Topsoil strip and bulk earthworks for new road alignment
  • 600m of road built with 40,000m3 of gypsum stabilised clay as a creek levee
  • Pavement constructed with 20,000m3 of engineered fill and 35,000ton of select, subbase and basecourse materia
  • Construction of new intersection
  • Road sealing and asphalting
  • 240m of pipe culverts
  • 2.5km of optic fibre including consisting of underbores
  • Hydromulching, guardrail, linemarking and street furniture

Highlights and Challenges:

  • Tight program to meet mine expansion schedule
  • Managed to complete the project a week ahead of schedule despite an overall total of six and half weeks of wet weather
  • A temporary road was constructed to divert existing traffic in and out of the mine to minimise disturbance while constructing tie ins for the new road
