Calala 120ML Water Storage Dam
Overview:
The construction of the 120ML raw water storage dam has improved harvesting efficiency of raw water sourced for the Tamworth, Moonbi and Kootingal town supply. This project has also provided Council with additional operational advantages such as improved raw water quality and potential electricity cost savings.
Scope of Works:
- HDPE lined water storage dam including associated large diameter poly pipe (up to 825mm diameter) reticulation and DICL values
- 11m deep pre-cast pump station and fit out
- Bulk earthworks (60,000m3) with clay material source from excavations and placed as engineered fill
Highlights and Challenges:
- Works required a number of major water supply shutdowns to provide connections for the new proposed water storage dam reticulation and valves, with maximum shutdown windows of 4 hrs
- Despite early setbacks to the program, the project was completed on time and under budget
- Raw water supply has increased from Chaffey Dam by up to 13% annually
